Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has a legacy of service that deepens, rather than ends, with college graduation.
The women who organized the Sorority were conscious of their privileged position as college-educated women of color. They were resolute that their college experiences should be as meaningful and productive as possible, that they should give back to their communities and be of service to all mankind.
In addition to its general awards, the Foundations has created a scholarship that honors the legacy of the Late Betty Vaughn Coles, a charter member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter. She was an educator who remained active in the sorority and community until her death on April 6, 2018. Ms. Coles was a golden member of the sorority with more than 65 years of service.

The Bert & Bell Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the lives of the late Bertha L. Dekle and Lillabelle “Bell” Legette, and to continue their legacy of excellence, generosity and service. Both distinguished women were related to a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter.

The Anna B. Eure Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of an educator who devoted her life to teaching and serving the community. Her humanitarian efforts have been acknowledged through community awards and proclamations. She passed on September 20, 2009. Her legacy of service continues through two daughters and two granddaughters who are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The Stanley Warren Davis Memorial Book Award was originally awarded in 2019 to honor the memory of a phenomenal man who served alongside women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as a mentor for youth. Mr. Davis served diligently in this partnership capacity as a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Since then, his family has decided to continue this book award as a tribute to his legacy of leadership and commitment to the educational advancement of young people.

The Monica L. Weaver Memorial Book Award has been established to honor the memory of a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter. A vibrant community advocate and college administrator, she received her undergraduate degree from Rider University. Ms. Weaver also completed graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Boston College and Kean University. Ms. Weaver was serving as Provost at Mercer County Community College, James Kerney Campus, at the time of her death on April 1, 2018. Ms. Weaver was dedicated to improving the lives of inner-city students.

The African American Chamber of Commerce New Jersey (AACCNJ) Scholarship has been earmarked by Founder/President & CEO Dr. John E. Harmon, Sr., and the Board of Directors to empower a local Trenton high school graduate for pursuit of higher education in the area of business and/or entrepreneurship. AACCNJ, a longtime supporter and sponsor of the Ivy League Educational Foundation, Inc., is dedicated to economically empowering and sustaining African American communities and businesses through entrepreneurship and capitalistic initiatives throughout the state of New Jersey and through its partnership with the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (NBCC). AACCNJ performs an essential role in New Jersey’s Economy. As affirmed in its mission statement, the Chamber seeks to economically empower and sustain African American communities, facilitating entrepreneurship and free enterprise activity within the state, with direct outreach programs. Unlike acting as simply an association of allied businesses, the Chamber serves as a proactive advocacy group with a 501(c)3 tax exemption, similar to the National Black Chamber. While providing a collective voice for New Jersey’s African American business leaders, the AACCNJ advocates and promotes economic diversity while fostering a climate of growth through major initiatives on the educational and public policy levels. Since African American consumers and businesses are often overlooked or marginalized, the AACCNJ serves as a mechanism for communication, program creation, and strategic implementation of resolutions that address the economic disparities of New Jersey’s African American business enterprises.

Scholarship Awards Reception

Each year the Foundation in conjunction with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter, holds a reception to recognize our scholarship recipients. The event is usually held in June where we welcome the recipients and their families. The program includes a message from a former scholarship recipient. Additionally, we showcase the talents of recipients and youth that we mentor. Our goal is to award 10,000 dollars in awards each year. The Foundation since its inception in 2002 is committed to assisting our youth in pursuit of higher education. In 2018 we established an additional scholarship in memory Betty Vaughn Coles for her commitment to education. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate of Trenton Central High School who has excelled educationally and is active in their community.
