The Ivy League Educational Foundation, Inc. was established in 2002 to provide educational programs for the greater Trenton community. Additionally, we provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships and book awards for deserving minority students who are pursuing higher education. The foundation sponsors and supports educational, cultural, and other charitable events.
In 2002, under the leadership of Shirley Tyler, a committee was formed to establish a tax-exempt entity. The members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter, believed that this would increase the Chapter’s ability to give scholarships since donations to the new entity would be tax deductible.
In addition, profit from its biennial Holiday Ball would be increased because it would no longer have to pay a significant amount of its proceeds in sales taxes. Geraldine R. Eure, chairperson of this committee, was given the task of establishing the tax-exempt entity.
In May 2002, The Epsilon Upsilon Omega Educational Foundation, Incorporated was formed, and on May 16, 2002, it was incorporated by Ms. Eure. The Foundation had no members, just a board. The initial board members were Edith Boone, Monica Carmichael, Betty Vaughn Coles, Geraldine R. Eure, Esq., Patricia Hicks, Beatrice Jones, Frances L. Smith, Riva Thomas, and Shirley Tyler. Geraldine R. Eure was elected the Foundation’s first president.
The purposes of the Foundation, as outlined in its Articles of Incorporation, are to 1) fund educational scholarships and other types of financial aid to individuals; 2) maintain and aid cultural, educational, charitable or other activities serving the community; 3) assist community groups and individuals in educational and charitable activities 4) work with youth in a variety of ways, encouraging and providing character building and leadership development; and 5) support humanitarian initiatives.
As a result of the creation of the Foundation, the chapter determined that it would no longer award scholarships but would use the Foundation as the vehicle to award scholarships. The biennial Holiday Ball, which was the major fundraiser for scholarships, became the fundraiser of the Foundation from which scholarships would be awarded. The initial funds for the Foundation included a donation received from the family of Daisy A. Morgan, funds from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter from the profit from the biennial Holiday Ball and donations.
Since its formation in 2002, the Foundation has worked hard to continue its primary mission of providing scholarships and book awards for deserving minority high school students in the Greater Trenton Community pursuing higher education.
The Foundation has also supported and sponsored educational, cultural and other charitable events aimed at improving the lives of the residents in the Greater Trenton area. Visit the Epsilon Upsilon Omega website for more information about our AKA Chapter.
